21st Century Boarding Pass
Interim is an exciting adventure that will help shape your college experience. You have
the entire month to explore any field that may interest you. Wofford wants you to take
full advantage of this time beginning with your first year. We want you to do more than
eat in Burwell; we want you to indulge in cheese fondue with your homestay family in
France. We want you to do more than view slides of the Brandenburg Gate; we want you to
actually pass through it and connect with the history of Berlin. We want you to do more
than take afternoon trips to Charlotte; we hope you will take afternoon trips to the home
of Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda on the coast of Chile. This is what the 21st
Century Boarding Pass is all about.
Ideal for first-year students, the 21st Century Boarding Pass makes it financially possible
for students to become immersed in another culture. Every first-year student who is in a
200 level foreign language course is eligible. The grant is a need and merit-based competitive
scholarship that requires its applicants to submit two faculty recommendations and an essay.
Those who are
chosen to participate will receive a significant scholarship to put towards
intensive language study in China, France, Germany or a Spanish-speaking country during
Interim. Depending on the location, the student will either be placed with a family or in
a dorm with other students from all over the globe. Mornings will consist of study of the
language and culture while afternoons will be filled with excursions such as hiking the
snow-capped mountains in France or volcanoes in Chile. Upon return, 21st Century Boarding
Pass recipients will continue their language study in the spring, a requirement stipulated
in the award.
